The wind was light and out of the southwest early, shifting more southeast late. Raptor Observations: Our flight was outstanding today. Speeding past fast and furious from the late morning on, there were precious few moments to catch one's breath before the arrival of the next flurry of migrants in need of counting. Pushed by the south wind, the flight line moved further northward as the day wore on. Sharp-shinned Hawks and American Kestrels led the way, joined by a heaping helping of Northern Harriers, a bountiful offering of Cooper's Hawks and plenty more swirling assemblages of Broad-winged Hawks. Non-raptor Observations: Sandhill Crane (2), Pine Siskin (25+), Purple Finch (4), American Goldfinch (60+), Blue Jay (8000+), Red-winged Blackbird (200+), Chimney Swift (2), Cape May Warbler (2), Killdeer (2) Predictions: Sunny and clear with moderate southeast wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
