Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders already using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Alternatively, please email, phone or post records directly to me - contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise.
Highlights: As passerine migration things begin to quieten down in the Kingston area, shorebirds and waders have crept to the forefront - best bird of the week being a GLOSSY IBIS, seen just across the border in Jefferson County, NY. Other highlights of the week include; BRANT, SANDHILL CRANE, RUDDY TURNSTONE, RED KNOT, DUNLIN, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, PRAIRIE WARBLER, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, and ORCHARD ORIOLE. City of Kingston Not too many sightings from the city this week. The Lemoine Point CA ORCHARD ORIOLES have continued this week but things are generally quieting down. Marshlands CA was fairly productive on 24th with OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, GREY-CHEEKED and SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, MOURNING, CAPE MAY, BAY-BREASTED and BLACKPOLL WARBLERS. As many as 6 GREAT EGRETS were found in the Westbrook area last weekend - a possible breeding colony has been noted not far from Kingston. BRANT continue to be seen, though in falling numbers - flocks of 5 and 80 were seen between Garden and Salmon Islands on 27th. Amherst Island The Martin Edwards Reserve has attracted fairly good numbers of shorebirds this week though nothing like the numbers found further west at Presqu'ile. WILSON'S PHALAROPES continue, though it was the 40 RUDDY TURNSTONE seen on the 25th and 360 DUNLIN there on 24th that have been this week's highlights. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen on the reserve on 29th. Elsewhere, WILSON'S WARBLER and 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen at the Owl Woods on 25th. Ferry services to both Amherst and Wolfe will be disrupted until the end of June - the Wolfe Island ferry is being serviced and has been replaced by the Amherst Island ferry, in turn replaced by the Glenora ferry, essentially halving capacity on all 3. Plan accordingly and car-pool if you can. Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve. Other sightings A number of good sightings have come from the US section of the Kingston Area circle this week - the highlight being a GLOSSY IBIS at Ashland Flats WMA from 24th-25th. Other US birds included HENSLOW'S SPARROW at Perch River on 23rd and a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER there on 27th. Back in Ontario, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen today (29th) just NW of Napanee. At Queens University Biological Station a PRAIRIE WARBLER was heard and seen on 26th. A SANDHILL CRANE was seen north of Sydenham, on Bedford Road, on 23rd. PINE SISKINS were seen on 23rd and 24th near Verona. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be distributed on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
