Many visitors had good looks at Turkey Vultures flying overhead. Weather: Today was cool with clear skies. Somewhat strong winds came from the north and west. Visibility was good all day, with a clear view to the Canadian shoreline. Raptor Observations: A large kettle of Turkey Vultures, consisting of individuals who apparently roosted very near to the count site, arose to the the north early this morning. This lazy river of vultures drifted to the west as Sharpies began to trickle in. Several sizable vulture kettles followed throughout the day, but none as big as the first. Ten other species were also counted today, which was our best 'TV' day this season. A day full of 'TV' at the count site is much better than a day full of TV in the living room!! Non-raptor Observations: There were relatively few Blue Jays migrating today (we only counted 240). Red-winged Blackbirds (130+), Mute Swans (8), American White Pelicans (10), and Monarch butterflies (5+) were also migrating today. Ducks and geese were also flying in flocks. We spotted our first migratory Sandhill Cranes (3) and our first Northern Mockingbird. Predictions: Tomorrow will likely also be a good day for Turkey Vulture viewing, as conditions will be similar to today (cool, with winds from the north and west). ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
