Weather: It was a chilly one! Temperature were in the mid-30sF most of the day, with persistent and sometime gusty NW winds. Skies were partly cloudy with relatively high barometric pressure. Raptor Observations: We did not get the flight we were hoping for today, with just 32 total raptors. Many of those were Red-tails, with a couple of Cooper's, Sharp-shinned, and Red-shouldered Hawks. We also had one juv. Bald Eagle. Non-raptor Observations: In general, non-raptor birds seemed to be on the move today. Several hundred Mallard ducks were seen in flocks throughout the day near the count site, with greater numbers of other unknown waterfowl species out on Lake Erie. At one point, we had a surprising "flock" of 21 Great Blue Herons, and about 150 Bonaparte's Gulls. The most unexpected non-raptor sighting was the two separate V-formations of Sandhill Cranes that passed over, one at 3:10 of 17 birds, the other at 3:40 of 10 birds. Sandhill Cranes are uncommon in this county, so they are always a treat to see! Predictions: Tomorrow's conditions will be similar, winds will be light and from NW. We could expect more of the same - should be a decent flight day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
