I read most of *Thinking in Java* on Lorin's recommendation, and found it
very useful. Eckel's writing style is irritating, because he sounds as
though he's trying to talk to a 5th grader and he's a little cutesy, but
he's thorough and clear and very good at exemplifying all the details in
helpful code examples. Much more than I can say for almost every other
computer book author I've ever read.
