Bingo!  I localized the bug out to occur right after the Windows ME
splash screen and then went and checked the TCP/IP params.  For some
inexplicable reason, the IP address on the windows side was set to be
the same as the machine I was working on.  Interestingly, after the
bug out, both machine's could access the internet fine.

But I set the IP properly and did a reboot from linux->windows on my
advisor's machine and my machine weathered the storm no problem.
