You are doing this thing totally wrong.
Yes, you cannot charge $$$ for your modified version, because of GPL.
However, if you take your programlines out of the original GPL code, and
distribute only those - with the remark that they sould be inserted INTO
here and here, yada yada - then you can charge whatever amount you wish to
charge.
It is like... well, say SSH2 for Linux. Linux is under GPL, however, SSH2 is
commercial - even though SSH2 can be a very internal part of the operating
system.
It is all just a matter of interpretation. Your version of the client code
is based on, built on the original code, which is GPL. However, if you do
not distribute the whole stuff, only your "patch"... or you rewrite the
whole thing, you are free to go.
But I might be mistaken.
