Normally, you can simply create them and make sure anything you want to
start when you log in (or start X) is started in the background (&)
except the final session control application.  The session control
application is the application that keeps the session active.  Normally
this is your window manager, but could be any other application.  The
point is when this application exits, your X session is over.

I don't know if "session control application" is the appropriate term,
but it seems more or less correct to me.
