It was decided that the behaviour was more consistent and intuitive if the
slit always acted the same, so it slides from the sides. If this list
believes that the old behavior is better I could be persuaded to either
make it act like it used to or provide the option to act in either the new
way or the old one.

I always thought that the combination of slit placement and slit orientation
(vertical/horizontal) decides what way it slides out. That is, always in
such way that the longer side slides in first. I never really checked this
come to think about it, but I guess that would be intuitive behaviour for
me.

It makes sense to me that the longest side would slide out first if it had the feel of a panel to someone, but that the shortest side would slide out first if it were to feel more like a drawer. It is more intuitive to me that the direction that it slides out is based on it's orientation rather than always trying to come out of the side. It also seems like something that people would want control over. I personally don't use autohide because I like to keep an eye on my slit, but from playing around a bit with the autohide, it really does seem like something that one would want to personalize.
