I can't reproduce this using a 2-days old CVS 0.70. I always get a
visible font for any 0.65 original style.

According to /etc/fonts/fonts.conf, fontconfig always aliases sans-serif
(as well as "sans" and "sans serif") to a probably well thought out
selection of (currently) 14 fonts.

Try a recent CVS and let's take it from there. The CVS moves pretty often
these days.
