I've noticed this too.  Using 0.60.2, if you simpy drag the aterm window
a bit, the image does change.  I'd recommend getting bsetbg from
http://www.lordzork.com/blackbox/ and updating your style files to use
it.  The syntax is deceptively simple, and you can use any image setting
utility you like (XV, ImageMagick, Esetroot).
