I assumed that you had to connect to the app (or at least its main window) and
query its X resources to get the class, so connecting to get some other
resource wouldn't be that much different.  But I could be wrong about that.

Yeah, that's why before asking my initial question I tried using -geometry to
move some of the windows way over to one side to see if it would show up on
another Workspace.

Possibly, but if there were a standard way of providing the Workspace hints,
then Blackbox could use that to build those initial lists.

Or maybe I should just stop whinging, and have a good look at the source code
for bbpager and see how *it* moves stuff from one workspace to another (using
WMInterface::changeDesktop, I beleive) and write a little app that would spawn
an application and move it to the appropriate desktop.   Hmmmmmm.
