This is not the window manager, but the shell you are using.  In Red Hat,
if you are running xterm/rxvt/etc. bash sets PROMPT_COMMAND so that you
get [EMAIL PROTECTED] which is quite useful for most people.  If you dont like
it, you can get rid of it (/etc/bashrc or ~/.bashrc) on your own.  I
cannot say whether other distros do this by default, I don't use other
distros.  But its generally a very useful thing, especially if you want
you to keep your prompt sane.
