This can be done regardless of whether the app is natively part of BB or
not.

Now this results in wasted space as each user now has their own installation
of BB rather than one central installation with each user having a few small
apps that they choose to use. This is really not practical for a system
with more than a few users.

Never complained about the time it takes (or doesn't take). The point is
that recompiling BB should not be necessary for the addition of these
components as evidenced by the fact that it currently is not. By putting
these apps into the native BB code you remove a layer of flexibility from
the current model. This would not be step forward, but a step back.
Additionally, it is directly against the goal of BB as stated on the BB web
page.
