Linux needs nothing. Linux is a kernel. 
People who use Linux and can't wrap their head around the concept of
using something textual to display something textual need someone to
write a good GUI mail client. And since there is little incentive for
someone to spend resources making trying to make a good GUI mail
client, you will probably be waiting a long, long time.
