I know this is off-topic, but i just had to correct this statement, since 
it's blatantly wrong.

KDEmail (a GUI email client) stores all mail as plain-text in a
standard format.  (in ~/Mail)  You can also choose to store your
addressbook as a plain-text file, one-address-per-line.

Please read up on it... i think you'll be surprised what it can do.
