this looks like it could be very easy to fix, the question is, how do we want
to handle it? sort through the list of depths and pick the highest one? in
the short term, i'll hardcode mine to 24 if need be, so i'll at least have a
working system, but i'd much rather fix it right.
thoughts? opinions? Brad? Sean? input?
