You do not have to use tabs in flux, you can very easily disable them. I use blackbox on my desktop but fluxbox on my laptop because you can pop up and scroll the root menu using keys (and in general do slightly more thing with keys than under bbkeys) Minimalising mouse usage is very handy on a laptop, at least for me! (And not having to use an xterm or key combination to open/start everything is handy too, I tend to forget the names of things I have not used for some time). I do not use tabs under flux.
