One really simple way is to use Expose: Show Desktop, triggered by
default with the F11 key. That slides all open windows to the very
edge of the screen, revealing the desktop so you can open something
you've downloaded to it or whatever. I find it useful enough that I've
assigned it to one of my 8 mouse buttons :)
