Well I'm using BezelHUD (my favourite) and yes, I have tried others.  The 
problem really is that the issue for me is so intermittent that, as ever in 
this type of situation, it's very hard to diagnose.

The other thing that happens to me is that sometimes after launch, QS fails to 
react to my 

 
⌃ 
␣ input at which times I often see a second, apparently live (light under icon) 
version of QS in my dock.  I have to <killall Dock> to make it go away after 
which the correct version of QS remains in the dock and QS runs happily.
