As Jon said, no. The contacts in the third pane are pulled out of the catalog, so they need to be there in the first place. Wherever possible, we try to make things check the catalog first, and if nothing is found, go get the information from the source on the spot. But that really only works internally to one plug-in. For example, if you don’t add contacts to the catalog, you can still see them by right-arrowing into Contacts.app because the stuff in the catalog and the stuff you see right-arrowing come from the same place.
