What Leo is asking for is pendoQS and my exact ask though - the ability to index things without adding them to the catalog. It's a signal to noise issue. In Leo's case it sounds like he doesn't want to clutter his global catalog/results with his contacts, but still wants quick access to them when he wants to do something with them - in the third pane. Alternatively what I am suggesting is he could also open the Contacts (Catalog), then search contacts.
In my case the main culprit is bookmarks. I don't want them in the global catalog, but I would like to be able to add a trigger for the bookmarks catalog so I can search them quick when I want them. Its the #1 thing that I still keep wanting from QS.
