Ha! Good spot. A beta version - 63 or 65 I think. (Deleted it before I made a note.) Installed v 1.1.3 and, reassuringly, the first thing it asked me was for permission to access my contacts. And yes, I can get my contacts again. I'm not quite sure how it happened that I had a beta version installed and had never updated. Thanks for the simple solution!
