The computer turns instantly dark, and can't restart without unplugging for a few minutes.

Dark as in off? Or just dim? Or is it the kernel panic screen with the warning in all the different languages?

In any case, if it can’t be restarted *immediately*, there is no software-based explanation I can think of. It’s also worth noting that Quicksilver doesn’t make any modifications to your system, or inject itself into running programs, or anything else that would contribute to system instability.

If it continues to happen, I’d take it back to the store and ask “If software is causing the problem, why can’t I restart immediately?”

One Quicksilver-related long-shot: The Extra Scripts plug-in includes scripts for “Shut Down” and “Force Shut Down”. If you have that installed, make sure you don’t have any triggers set up that would allow you to run such commands on accident. I think you’d see the normal orderly shut down process if that were the case, though.
