Firstly, is there a way to remove an abbreviation, once assigned. That's
what I came to search.

Secondly, maybe somebody can share some insight into why my abbreviation
doesn't work the way I want. I dragged the file (contained in ~/Documents)
to the top box in the Quicksilver window. I hit tab, picked 'assign
abbreviation', entered 'j6', tabbed, hit enter to execute. Next, I summoned
the window and typed 'j6'. The desired path appeared, but it no longer
appeared as a file, and there was no 'open' action available. Of course
opening the file is what I want.
