Firstly, is there a way to remove an abbreviation, once assigned. That's
what I came to search.

You can shut down Quicksilver and manually edit `~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/Mnemonics.plist`, but I’d make a backup first in case something goes wrong.

Secondly, maybe somebody can share some insight into why my abbreviation doesn't work the way I want. I dragged the file (contained in ~/Documents)
to the top box in the Quicksilver window. I hit tab, picked 'assign
abbreviation', entered 'j6', tabbed, hit enter to execute. Next, I summoned
the window and typed 'j6'. The desired path appeared, but it no longer
appeared as a file, and there was no 'open' action available. Of course
opening the file is what I want.

You can find some information about this in the manual.

Do ‘j’ and ‘6’ appear in the file’s name? You should have seen an error if not, but just making sure.

I’m not sure about the path appearing as a string instead of a file. Even if you had typed the path by hand, it should be recognized as a file. If you open Quicksilver, hit `.` for text entry mode, and type “~/Desktop”, do you see the Open action? When you tried your new abbreviation, what actions _did_ you see?
