I'm willing to close this ticket. I just built a new system (svn
20161215) on my laptop (no /usr/lib64) and the Star Wars DVD plays fine
with vlc. I also tried an audio disk and it is playing as I type this.
mplayer seems to work too. I have not installed xine or parole.
I didn't try DVD/CD writing.
My laptop is different from the development system I tested on before so
my earlier issues could have been HW or, more likely, older packages than
that in the current (svn) book.
