Everything I came up with on this one pointed to ffmpeg. VLC was always OK
for me, and ultimately Mplayer and anything that used gstreamer was OK
after a bit of tweaking. I think they were picking poor output devices but
am unsure if that was actually the fix, but they seem to work for me now.
Ffmpeg produced output files with constant skips last time I messed with
it, but there have been two minor versions since. Also, one of the DVD
burning programs, I don't recall which (but it was something out of the
ordinary, one of those jenky little frontends to do an all in one
conversion), was trying to use xorisofs and complained about a missing
-cdrecord flag, so I found cdrkit. I don't know if that is related to the
original problems, but I'm not convinced that the growisofs sed is a
complete fix. cdrkit is difficult to find, but can still be obtained, I
think from RH IIRC.
