Take a look at the thread view, and the continuation is titled "Example of a Careful Runlevel Script" I also brought it up the inittab approach about a year later (???), but the result was the same IIRC...I can't seem to find it right now though. If it matters, I do agree that the script is easier to recover from, however as personal preference, I'd still do the latter if I booted to RL5. I exclusivly boot to RL3 and startx when I need gui, and I probably always will do that. Also I have a fuzzy memory of somebody mentioning one of the distros that used the inittab method had a way to drop runlevels if init respawned too fast...unfortunately that is not a lot to go on and I'm running late as usual.
