I think you're on topic, so much so that I've quoted your text, and renamed the thread. I think it is a great idea to rename the GNOME-1.4 installation path and reserve /opt/gnome for a symlink to /opt/gnome-currentversion. And, just so you know, I don't think many folks would actually use a GNOME-1.4 desktop, but we need to keep the libs in there as GnuCash requires almost of those libs. Anyway, unless there's some compelling reason to keep the GNOME-1.4 libs in /opt/gnome, or we receive strong objection from the community, I think we should do as DJ suggests and change the GNOME-1.4 install path.
