I found these. The 2nd thread is not very useful, but the first is.

LFS/BLFS users are knowledgeable. They also do a lot of
experimentation. For that reason, I suspect most just boot to RL 3 and
startx. The {x,g,k}dm programs are, imo, for the general user and not
the LFS user. OTOH, we sometimes want to set up a LFS system for a
general user that uses {x,g,k}dm.
LFS/BLFS are intended to be primarily educational projects. For that
reason we need to present multiple methods when appropriate. We do that
in several places. For instance, no one needs both xorg and xfree86 (or
mozilla and firefox, or several other alternatives).
The best way to handle {x,g,k}dm is to show how to set it up both ways.
