I am not fully convinced that current HAL instructions are correct. I
do believe that functionality of HAL is restricted if PCIUtils (only
because this package is the default BLFS method of getting the pci.ids
file installed on the system.) is not installed, but lack of libusb
doesn't restrict functionality.
I will be on record as outright asking the community if the current HAL
instructions need changing, if they are good or bad, and what else
needs to be done to make it better. I really never received any input
that I didn't implement.
I still don't know what to do about the managed keyword in the
/etc/fstab file. I still don't know if running the daemon as root so
that /etc/fstab *can* be updated as devices are added/removed is the
right method of operation.
Only because *lots* of folks were (rightly so) asking about HAL/D-BUS,
and when and if it would be added to BLFS was it added. Shoot, the API
just recently stabilized enough so that GNOME can actually use the
newer versions. KDE (not sure about 3.5) still doesn't use the newer
API/ABI.
Sorry for the long-windedness of this message, but the HAL issue is
one I'd like to fix. I just don't know enough about the big picture
of HAL/D-BUS to really be confident in the instructions. I simply did
the best I could, and hoped that it was at least half-right.
And, Manuel, my last few messages on this topic ("Recommended")
haven't been so much to ask about what should or should not be
"Recommended", my motive is more trying to define the role of the
Editor, and how the Editor should interact with the community to
ensure BLFS is community driven.
