I will admit this thread confused me. I really never saw a solution

Thunderbird, as this is the only way to get it until from what it
sounds like, Thunderbird-1.5 comes out.


No, a sed to the _user's_ prefs.js will work fine (I didn't know this or look into it, before posting my reply), but please don't make it a default set of instructions. Wrap it with something to the effect of "If your [window manager || desktop suite] does not support defalut protocol handlers, then these commands will allow [firefox || thunderbird] to handle links correctly."
