You're probably right about Type1 fonts being an issue, but I don't

I think you're right about bitmap fonts. I install some truetype fonts
in /usr/share/fonts/TTF (obviously, as an English speaker, these are the
main fonts for me) and I also install the `misc' fonts I got from
xorg-6.8.2 in /usr/share/fonts/misc. I think these are bitmap fonts and
I install them because if I don't then Firefox renders Chinese and
Japanese characters as little squares with numbers in. The fact that it
works and Firefox renders the Chinese glyphs suggests to me that
fontconfig is aware of these bitmap fonts. I'm probably showing the
extent of my ignorance here so I'll shut up :)
Regardless, the fonts will be going in the X default location
($XORG_PREFIX/lib/X11/fonts) and symlinks to OTF and TTF will be made
in /usr/share/fonts. I think you, Alexander and I are in agreement
here. :-) Andrew, DJ?
Looks good ;o)
I'm still going to make my installation with the fonts in
/usr/share/X11/fonts.
I'm sold. I'll give that try that too, it sounds like the way to go.
