OK Randy.  I updated the procedure to combine options 1 and 3.  It is a 
fairly large departure for the book's general philosophy, but I think it 
actually will allow users to install with a lot less bandwidth and disk 
space use.

We probably ought to document the major applications in the Contents 
section: tex, latex, dvips and related dvi*, mf, xdvi, and perhaps weave.
