Replying, briefly, to myself - using just 'make' the install completed slightly less slowly. And it did not run any tests. Looking back at the earlier log (on this occasion, I saved it) I can see that the 'File tested' spew came after a segfault. Apart from that, there was no sign of any tests in 'make build'.
