The bridging that is in the book works now. The only issue is how to get it to work with a non-root user.

  At the moment my test-builds have stalled while I learn a bit more
about graphics drivers for BLFS in a qemu guest.  I think I'll be
proposing that we build the modesetting driver instead of cirrus,
but I need to build a new kernel without CONFIG_DRM_CIRRUS_QEMU
first, to see what cirrus actually offers.

I'm not familiar with the modesetting driver. But I found this page to be interesting:
