It's the gtk+-3.20 patch which breaks this (strictly, only in HERE
documents in the books, although the highlighting of other selected
text is less obvious) - i.e. when used in versions of gtk3 <= 3.18.

Now I've got to reinstate the other things I dropped from the build,
to be sure.
