I interpret "nothing worked" to mean "no video in Xorg".  If I've
misunderstood you, please clarify, and ignore the rest of this reply.

Anything relevant in the Xorg log, or indeed in the system log (or
journalctl if this is systemd) ?

For systems *without* a DM,
 startx 2>&1 | tee xlog
will capture any errors which might otherwise disappear.
