For porting lxde to GTK+3, I have decided to rebuild completely lfs/blfs with
most recent versions.
I'd be interested in knowing if Qt builds for you. If it does, I think
I will follow suit and do a fresh rebuild.
I'm probably going to follow suit here as well. I wouldn't have discovered
that issue with Vala when updating GNOME to 3.32. I did notice that linux-5
and gcc-8.3.0 had a major performance improvement the other day when I was
testing out systemd-241 (shaved 11 seconds off my SBU!).
OTOH, almost all the lxde packages show an increase in required disk space (a
couple of packages show an increase of 30 %). I wonder if it has something to
do with gcc-8.3 or with GTK+-3.
To answer Roger's question: LXDE/GTK+3 has some annoying little defects
(gpicview has no menus, the panel sometimes is not shown in full), which I'd
like to iron out (if possible) before putting it in the book. So I'll
eventually build Qt, but after I finish this ticket.

This is just a hunch, but this sounds like a GTK+-3 thing. GTK+-3 added
bloat everywhere, and it does carry over to client-side applications.
Please iron those issues out if you can. I had a bug in LXPanel (before
0.10.0) that would cause a General Protection Fault in glib2 and
gobject-introspection. The bug would occur anytime I right-clicked on an
application on the taskbar and closed it, and then tried to switch
applications. Most of the time, the panel would not come back up
properly, and I would have to kill X and start again. This caused lots
of downtime and problems with productivity... bugs in a DE like that are
never fun!
