Hi all
For anybody using xfce4 as their desktop, I wanted to share my progress
regarding the new release.
I have now compiled all new packages in the usual order, without any
problem. Just to be sure, I have also re-compiled those packages in the
xfce chapter (garcon, xfce4-notifyd) that got no new versions, just to
be sure.
I could then successfully log in to my desktop, without any problems,
everything that was newly compiled seems to work. I have not tested all
other applications yet, but I can confirm that at least xfce4-terminal
needs a recompile, while xfce4-screenshooter does not.
I will do further test later and then update all the pages.
But in short: it seems that an upgrade will go very smoothly and there
won't be many changes in the book for the new release, which is quite nice.
That good to hear that xfce is still alive and that the upgrade is not
that heavy. I'm using xfce since years and i love it as it is (to me)
the right balance between functionality and simplyness. Looking
forward to see if there are some design changes.
Same for me, using xfce4 for ages now, and I am still very happy with it.
The clear visible change is that the panel and the menu (and I suppose
all panel plugins) are gtk3 instead of gtk2, so everything looks a bit
different, but still has the same look and feel
What about dependencies to gtk2/gtk3? Do we still need both?
An
ldd /opt/X11/bin/xf* |grep gtk
(that's where I have all xfce4 stuff) returns only
/opt/X11/lib/libgtk-3.so.0
so, no program, apart from xfburn (which I quickly deinstalled, just to
check) links to gtk2 anymore.
On the panel plugins side, only xfce4-xkb-plugin still links to
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0, even if re-compiled.
So I would say, if you don't want to use those two, you don't need gtk2
anymore.
I still need gtk2 for gimp and geany anyways, so I don't care.
Bye
Tim
