Second update: I think I'm going to give up (but both the radeon and
amdgpu drivers are working).
I spent time looking at the patch on my (radeon) Caicos machine
where it was working. AFAICS the patch causes the server to call
/usr/bin/drm_master_util in the added thread_func, whcih is invoked
further down. What I did not initially notice was that in
thread_func the exist on bad status is commented. So, the patch
invokes /usr/bin/drm_master_util : but it does not create that and I
have no such program installed,
After looking at that I went back to the Picasso where I was using
modesetting, and installed the amdgpu driver without patching the
server. Using startx works, the Xorg log shows it is using AMDG@U.
Now I've come back to the Caicos (R600) and rebuilt xorg-server
without the patch. Again, startx works and the log shows it is
(still) using RADEON.
I have to conclude that I overlooked something in my builds on
Friday. All I can say (and I guess it won't wash with DJ or Bruce)
was that replacing the book with the rootless version was for me a
very painful experience (no diffs to look at).
I think I'd better concentrate on things which cause me less pain.
