Your logs should tell you. Presuming you don't have any, you can hit
ctrl_alt_F2, log in, and find out what's going on.

Where is the /etc directory for your cd? 

Is the XF86Config happy with the video card? Is X finding everything?
Have fun......
Find out what is actually happening, or what bits of the system are missing
