Hi,
I'm having some serious woes while trying to set up audio on my x86_64 (pure
64) LFS build (in the hopes of having all kinds of multimedia adventures).
I'm not to savvy with hardware, so forgive me if the solution is glaringly
obvious to anyone. ALSA and the proper sound card driver have been built into
the kernel (see below).
I'm using the svn version of the BLFS book. In the ALSA Utilities chapter of
BLFS, the "alsactl state" command yields this (my first indication of a
problem):
alsactl: save_state:1163: No soundcards found...
And alsaconf only prints the following:
modinfo: could not find module snd
modinfo: could not find module snd
modinfo: could not find module snd
Error, dialog or whiptail not found.
I now believe that alsaconf only works with modules. Certainly, it
needs either dialog or whiptail, but I'm no longer convinced that it
serves a useful purpose if you build your own kernels - my main desktop
machine no longer uses any config files for alsa, other than the mixer
settings.
CONFIG_SND_AC97_CODEC=y
...
CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0=y (The one labeled under PCI as "Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD/ALi
AC97 Controller")
The sound card is built in on an NVidia chipset for an Athlon64 processor.
From dmesg: #0: NVidia CK804 with ALC850 at 0xd2002000, irq 23
lspci also finds it: 00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation
CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2)
First question: do you really have a problem ? All we can see is that
alsaconf doesn't run for you.
If you try to play a sound file that alsa can handle (.wav is probably
easiest), and you unmute the controls in alsamixer and turn them up, and
your amp/speakers are powered up, does it work ? (As root, to avoid
permissions problems if you aren't in the audio group.) If you can't
use the volume controls, that would be a sign that you have the wrong
sound driver - this is an area where google can return a lot of
information, much of it conflicting or just plain wrong.
Some soundcards have so many controls that you have to scroll sideways
(cursor, or tab) to access (and unmute) them all.
