OK, never mind. Looks like I'm not as dumb as I thought I was. Or maybe I'm
more dumb.
In section 7.12.1 Creating stable names for network interfaces, I went ahead
and created the /etc/udev/rules.d/26-network.rules file even though it is
optional for me. When I removed this file and rebooted my dhcp is now working.
 However I'm still getting an error when I boot:

RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Gateway already setup; skipping.

That doesn't sound too bad since I can ping www.google.com but is there a way
to get rid of the error?

Well, I'm not sure what you needed to see on the CONFIG_NET, but here's what
the config file contains:

CONFIG_NET=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER=y
CONFIG_NETDEVICES=y
CONFIG_NET_ETHERNET=y
CONFIG_NET_PCI=y

And here's what the call to ip link show shows:

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue
  link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00

2: e1000: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop qlen 1000
  link/ether 00:06:5b:cd:28:1f brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

If I'm reading this right it looks like the hardware is there and the module is
loaded correctly, right?

Thanks

Well, it's seems OK that it shows 0. My ethernet driver is sundance, and it
shows Used by 0. Besides, the module wouldn't have been loaded if the device
wasn't in use. Did you add networking support to your kernel? CONFIG_NET=y/m
and friends?

What's the output from "/sbin/ip link show"?
