Just to finish this thread off and perhaps to help other readers, I used
to get caught out by not having a properly configured /etc/resolve.conf.
Before Dan replied that would have been my suggestion to check out. I
must admit as I tend to C&P or use jhalfs now, I don't get the nsswitch
file messed up - usually :-)
