I couldn't begin to tell you where this error stems from. I really don't use mplayer except when in a bind. Maybe someone else has a deeper understanding of the multimedia black magic. If you really want to use Mplayer, you might have to go through their support channels. On the other hand, if Totem is working (over xine-lib, I presume) use it.
