Hi Dan,
       Well, I took your suggestion and pulled down the 1.0rc1. I didn't
apply
any of the patches in the book and it compiled with quite a few
warnings. More than earlier version. After the install I started it from
the command line and it started playing the DVD without stopping at the
menu. The window I started it from was streaming these messages.

There was no sound and the picture was broken large random pixles of
unintelligent data bouncing around. The same video runs fine in totem.
Any ideas?

Looks like your liba52 is corrupt, try reinstalling it from
http://liba52.sourceforge.net/.
That should fix the problem.
