Yes, you were right. It had something to do with gstreamer. I installed it and all went well. Thank you. Actually, streamer is listed as optional rather than required or recommended. So I did not install it. Perhaps it should be listed as required. I have finally managed to install GNOME. So I think that bit with "fudging" xft helped.
