Bah Don't feel dumb, many people can never recover from an error in the manual. ;) I think the reason they want the DIMMs in certain sockets is to terminate the end of the transmission lines running to the DIMM sockets. The 4 wire fans use an extra pulse width control line to control the speed. I would not assume that that motherboard could control the speed of a 3 wire fan, but it should be able to regulate the speed of a 4 wire fan.
